Mother Teresa once said, “If you judge people, you have no time to love them”. We all must have heard this saying several times, but putting it to practice is, well, another thing all-together.
Today, I am sharing one of my favorite stories on judgement. Do read it all the way through and share it with the ones you love. It makes a compelling case against judging people without knowing them.
The 24 year old boy – Anonymous
A few years ago, a 24 year old boy seeing out from the train’s window shouted… “Dad, look the trees are going behind us!”
As his Dad smiled, a young couple sitting nearby, looked at the 24 year old’s childish behavior with pity, when suddenly he again exclaimed… “Dad, look the clouds are running with us!”
The couple couldn’t resist and said to the old man… “Why don’t you take your son to see a good doctor?”
The old man smiled and said… “I did and we are just coming from the hospital. My son was blind from birth and he just got his eyesight today.”
*Don’t judge people before you truly know them. The truth might surprise you.*
None of us can claim to be totally non-judgmental beings (not me for sure). We all have our prejudices and pre-conceived notions. However, we can try to not let our biases control our words and our actions. Don’t you think?

I love that story Shantala. Being non-judgmental is one of the many things I learnt after motherhood. It kind of puts things in perspective.

Great story which gives a lot to think and ponder on. It is so easy to be judgmental. We are experts at forming opinions about the book just by looking at the cover and we are usually so wrong when we do just that!

So true Shantala. We often judge people on the whim of the moment not knowing them or their story. If only we knew them, our opinion will be so much different! Lovely post 🙂

What a wonderful story. And people are so judgmental and so quickly. I learned as a teacher not to trust first judgments. They’re seldom right.

Yes. Even I don’t think I am completely non judgmental. But I do hope that people think before they blurt out their judgment.

I just came here from Parul’s blog and you guys have written awesome posts on not being judgmental. I consciously avoid judging people because everyone here is trying to survive, fighting their own battles. Why be unnecessary harsh on them? Loved the story too 🙂 Great post Shantala 🙂

That was so true, Shantala! I loved this story – have read it earlier – and it is a perfect example of how we as human beings are. Always ready to jump to conclusions about people we know not. It is something I have learnt the hard way: never to judge a person, unless I have walked in his shoes for a mile. It is something I learnt by being at the receiving end of some bitter judgemental remarks by people who knew nothing about me, or my family. It is something, I always do my best to remember when meeting a person for the first time, or thinking about people I don’t know. Great poet, Shantala.

Hi,
Many a times being judgmental about someone due to preconceived notions gives false impression of the person. Creates a barrier, many times difficult to break.

Well said Shantala. We must always believe in the notion that we do not have the full story behind each person’s behaviour. Difficult to do at times, especially when you are at the receiving end of the criticism. But if you can, then more power to you.

Perfect example of things not being what they seem. I do my best not to be judgemental and would certainly never comment as those people did to the father. It’s none of their business! This struck a nerve, as it’s a major pet peeve.
