Midnight Sun – The much awaited installment of the Twilight Saga was finally out on 4th August. And much as I tried, I could only resist for 24 hours, before getting the book on Audible.
Which was weird, because honestly I did not really care if this book would see the light of the day or not. I mean, of-course when I first read the Twilight series ages ago, I was eager for this book. But over the years, I kinda lost interest. Or so I thought.
So I can’t fully explain why I felt the need to immediately get this book when it started popping all over my social media feed on release day. But I did, and here I am, only a few days later, having binge-listened to the audiobook over the weekend, reviewing it for you guys.

But first, for the uninitiated..
What is Midnight Sun?
Midnight Sun is Book 5 of 5 of the Twilight Saga. Essentially Twilight Book #1 from Edward’s point of view, instead of Bella’s point of view.
My Initial Thoughts
When I first heard of this book coming out this year, I have to say I was kinda surprised. Because I knew this was meant to come out years ago, but then an early draft of the manuscript got leaked, which supposedly upset the author enough to give up on the project. And since then, she has always been non-committal on the subject.
So when a month back I heard the news of the release, I first thought it was some kind of fake news. You know there is no dearth of that these days. Sigh.
But then I found out it was actually releasing, and I have to admit to being curious. I wondered why did she choose to release this book after all this time? Whether there was a point she wanted to make? And whether this book will be something more than what everyone expected it to be.
And I think it was this curiosity, more than anything else, that made me pick up this book within a day of its release.
The things I liked..
This first one is kinda obvious, I guess, but it was refreshing to be in Edward’s head instead of Bella’s. Even die-hard Twilight fans would agree that it was annoying being in her head at times. Especially in the later books.
I loved the tiny bits of additional insight the author shared about Edward’s past, and what made him who he was.
I finally could see what Edward saw in Bella. Because honestly, as much as I rooted for this couple, I could never understand what about Bella appealed to Edward, outside of her scent that is, him being a vampire and all that.
And finally, it was a sweet nostalgic experience to be back in this world, after such a long time.

But..there is a BUT, which cannot be shared in a spoiler free review..
So let me just say that as much as I found the ride to be interesting, I wasn’t fully satisfied with the final destination. Not because anything was particularly wrong with it. It was just that I expected more. Especially after all this time.
I am less cryptic and more specific about this in my Goodreads review here, so hop on there if you are interested to know, and don’t care about spoilers. But in the interest of keeping this review here on the blog spoiler free, that’s all I can say.
Final Thoughts..
If you love this series, you should definitely check out this book. If nothing, you’ll get to relive the sweet nostalgic love story from a fresh pair of eyes.
And who knows, unlike me, you might even love how it ended..because I know that a lot of people will be very happy with the route the author chose. So don’t let my underwhelming response to the route dissuade you from picking this book up. Because it might be exactly what you expected and wanted.

Audiobook Review:
This is a LONG book, which is the reason why I chose to listen to it vs read it, because I don’t think I would have had the patience to read such a long book, especially when it wasn’t even a new story.
But I really liked the narration and the overall listening experience, so I definitely recommend the audiobook version of this book. And if you are new to Audible, you can get this one for free on their FREE trial program. So check it out, if you haven’t already.
That’s all from me for now. I’d love to hear from you. Did you read this book yet? Are you intending to pick it up? If you’ve already read it, I’d love to hear what you thought!
PIN THIS POST!

You know what?! Thisis one of the rare series where I’ve watched the movie(kinda obsessed with it actually) but never read the book. I always wanted to own the series first before reading and I kept postponing it. Now that Midnight Sun has released, I really should pick it up and start from the beginning. But do I have the patience to read the entire thing (and this humongous book), I don;t know 😛
Ah interesting. But honestly Shalu, the twilight series books are so much better than the movie, you should check them out. Though the movies get better after the first one, which was kind of a disaster compared to the book. Overall the books are much much better. So try it out. Atleast the original series. This book is not must read stuff.
I am glad you enjoyed this book. It is not my cuppa tea but I have been following the reviews around the blogosphere. And looks like she still delivered!

I actually expected more from this one, especially after all this time. And in that sense it was a let down. But I know for a lot of people, this will be exactly what they would want.

Yeah it gets trickier after so much time has passed. The expectations get more out of control.
