Why do you blog? – It’s a question I have been asked often. And I have answered it multiple times too. Though of-course as time passed my reasons changed and so did my answers.
But recently when I was answering this question (for what seemed like the 100th time) the thing that truly stood out to me was how I could no longer give just one reason as to why I blog. And actually more important was the realization that came with it, that even though I do have a laundry list of reasons as to why I blog, most of it could disappear tomorrow, and I could still never consider giving up blogging completely.
That thought gave me pause. Because honestly when I first started blogging, my blog was a little more than a glorified online journal, meant to mostly dispel boredom. Of-course clearly a lot has changed since then, because even though I am not exactly sure how, blogging has now become an integral part of my life, an extension of myself, and my identity, so to speak.
Why is why the honest, unembellished answer to the titular question is – I blog because I just cannot stop. It’s as simple and as complicated as that.
Of-course there are more layers to this, more specific reasons why blogging gives me so much joy, why & how it is a part of the core of what I want from my life going forward.
So let me take a shot at answering this question here today, to the extent I can anyway. Because I don’t think I’m ever going to be able to articulate all the reasons why I blog, why it completes me in a way I can’t even fully begin to express in the first place.
Why Do You Blog? For Passion or Profit?
Before we even get into this, I want to acknowledge something. I realize a lot of people consider blogging and writing to be very different things. And to an extent I see their point of view, but for me, it’s basically one and the same thing. Considering that the only thing I write is my blog (outside of all my lists of-course). Which is essentially the reason why, the first couple of things I talk about here revolve around why I write as opposed to why I blog.
- So last week I came across a quote/meme on social media, which said – My words sound better coming from my hands than my mouth. That is exactly how it is for me. I am a whole lot better at expressing my thoughts on paper. Which is not to say that I can’t make decent conversation, I can. It’s just that I am more articulate on paper. Which is why, more often than not I choose to write to speak my mind as opposed to literally speak it. 😀
- Moreover, every single time I write, it’s almost like I am unlocking something within myself. I am not sure if I can even explain it right, but almost every time I sit down to write, I gain new perspective, new insight into my own thoughts & feelings, and so in a very weird way, writing helps me connect with myself.
Related: Shanaya Tales – The Blog “Birth Story”
That being said, of-course I don’t necessarily need to share my writing on a public forum (like a blog), because I can find expression and connect with myself even through writing a private journal. But blogging fulfills me in many other ways, some of which I have tried to list down below.
- For one, even though I started blogging mostly to dispel boredom, it’s now my passion, my creative release, and my pet project – all rolled into one. And it’s also a source of constant joy and pride, because hey I built this thing from nothing. And I know it’s not like some huge accomplishment, but it’s equal parts empowering and fulfilling to just know how far I have come in this journey.
- Moreover I met some amazing people through my blog. People whom I possibly wouldn’t have gotten to know without blogging, people who are exceptional and inspiring in so many ways, yet extremely humble, steadfast, and loyal at the same time. People with the kindest hearts & the warmest virtual hugs. These beautiful connections and friendships are also the reason I am super glad I started a blog, and continue to write/blog.
- And finally, I am not sure if I have ever mentioned this here, but I have always wanted to build something of my own instead of working for someone else. And through blogging I feel like I finally have that opportunity now. So it’s something I am planning for and working towards. Of-course these plans are not for Shanaya Tales really. And more importantly, as of now they are just that – plans, which are pending execution.
And yes, I do realize that it’s a long shot, but hey, we should always dream big, right? Because life is too short for being super practical all the time. And anyway, even if it all comes to nothing, I for one, will take solace in the fact that I spent my time working towards something I am passionate about instead of binge-watching Netflix. Not that there is anything wrong with the latter. I’m just hard wired to always have a project that I am working towards. This just happens to be a project that is fueled by my deepest desires.
That’s all from my end, folks. Why do you blog? Has the reason you blog changed and evolved over the years? This is of-course assuming you have been blogging for some time now. But even if you have only recently started blogging, I’d love to hear what made you take the plunge and start a blog. Please do share, and we can chat in the comments!

What motivates me to blog? You piqued my interest by asking this question. The main reason I do it is because like you said, I enjoy sharing my opinions and hearing what others have to say.

I’ve tried to answer this many times and can never really find a reason except that blogging makes me happy. Oh and that bit about connecting with people does resonate with me. I love it when people share a bit about themselves – agree or disagree with what I’ve said in my post. Also, over the years I find myself writing better so there’s that happiness of becoming better at something.

Oh yes, there is that too. I have gotten much better at writing, and I’ve become more articulate while sharing my thoughts, and it makes me happy too. 🙂

This is one of my favourite topics and the best part? I find that each time I re-visit this question, the answer is different. At the heart of it, I completely agree with you. I blog because I love it. No question about it. I wouldn’t be doing it for the last 11 years if that wasn’t the case.
And while I am one of those who makes that distinction between writing and blogging, it’s only because I see it as two different situations in my head. Which is not to say I disagree with your POV completely. It’s just that I feel many bloggers (yourself excepted) don’t pay attention to their blogs the way a writer does to their craft.
That said, I love this post, I love the way you talk about it and I love you. A whole lot.

Of course .. I was nodding my head to all the reasons mentioned here. And especially writing being my favorite medium of expression.
I am glad that I express. That matters more than anything else. An connection with like minded people.

Why do I blog? For the exact same reasons that you do, Shantala! In fact, this entire post could be mine…word for word! I, too, am so glad I met you, dear! Love your style of writing, your reviews and your expressions..and most of all, YOU!

We all ask these questions to ourselves every once in a while, right? The reasons, as you mentioned, evolve from time to time. Others won’t be able to understand it but a fellow blogger can sure resonate.
I started to blog as a way to document my random poetic scribblings. It changed into much more later. The community, the friends, the learnings, everything pulls me back into this space even when I find it hard to blog. I blog because it makes me feel good. I have opinions on everything and my blog is where I talk with no reservations. I reinvented me through blogging. Blogging and writing have become my identity and I am so damn proud about it.

I blog because memories may blur and the facts may be forgotten, I write to record the journey of our life and times. Reading the old posts give me that wonderful feeling of moving backward in time and making the past memories and moments come live in front of me.
I blog to crystallize my thoughts. Writing crystallizes half-baked or unbaked thoughts, gives them form, and multiply the chains of thoughts in new directions.
A major part of my blog is my personal musings and experiences. I write for my son to read this account, the tidbits from our life, and construct the story of our life, learn and know our experiences, thoughts and views ‘then’ and memories, when he grows up.
And being able to make money through my blog while doing all this is an added reason to blog.
Shanaya Tales
Yes, yes, and yes! All those things you mentioned – I can relate with them too. All really great reasons to blog. Though I have to admit, I never thought about my son perusing my blog once he grows up – and the fact that at that time (through my blog posts) he will be able to read my thoughts on parenting, and life in general – such a priceless bonus that is!

You know, I started blogging on a whim. I’ve had this blog for about 11 years now – and it’s evolved over the years from an online journal to finally having some sort of niche. Now, I blog because I’m really passionate about sharing and teaching from my personal experiences of healing through art, tarot, writing, mindfulness. My blog is almost like an extension of me. So I may occasionally be irregular, but I don’t think I will ever stop blogging.

True that blogging has changed so much for all of us. I started because I had to put in a book review and I was so excited about it. I realised I loved the writing aspects. I then thought of writing many book reivews but I got bored soon. I realised, I wanted to write. And now, that is my sole purpose. But, Happy blogging..

I blog because it helps me feels better. I blog because it lifts a weight off my shoulders. I blog because I like to talk. I blog because I have very strong opinions and want to hear what others have to say about it. Mainly, I blog because I want to.
Money is important as well, but it features way later on my list. I started blogging as a hobby and it remains that way. It is important to pursue your hobbies and passions and that is what I do. Like Rachna said, blogging has given me so many wonderful blogging friends whom I would never have met if it was not for blogging.

Loved this post Shantala. An existential question that most bloggers are asking themselves today. Especially given the trend of blogging becoming more of an avenue for monetization than creative expression. I realize I tick all the same boxes you do! The comradeship with like minded bloggers, the engaging relationships I have built in the past few years mean a lot more to me than I thought possible. Even when I go months..shamefully true, yes months without blogging, my blog is on my mind all the while in the background. It is like my alter ego at most times and my sounding board at other times. I say, once a blogger, forever a blogger. Cheers to many more years of blogging!

Interesting question, Shantala.
I started blogging to take out my frustration against Indian society for its duplicity when S and I were struggling to get married.
But gradually it became an extension of myself and so much more. I have changed. My voice and my reactions have changed. But like you one thing I know for sure and that is I cannot ever give up blogging. Touch wood! Here’s to us!

Why do I blog? An interesting question and I was nodding along your reasons for blogging. For me, first and foremost, it is because like you said I love to share my opinions and hear what others shares. Some of the other very important reasons are the money I make from blogging and also of connecting with these wonderful bloggers who I would have never met if it were not for blogging.
Of having setup two successful blogs from scratch, blogging actually launched my career as Editor, writer and social media strategist. It has provided me respect and an identity after I changed courses with my career. So yes, blogging is my passion and I don’t take it lightly. Loved reading this post, Shantala.
Shanaya Tales
Oh yes, I forgot to add that in my post, but I got my current job because of my blog, so it did help me re-start a career in US after a break of almost 6 years.
I am glad you enjoyed this post, Rachna. 🙂
